HDR and Lightroom

Hi, Will:

You are my m43 god.  I am so thankful for all the work you have put into your website.  You have totally solidified my choice to mirrorless.  I constantly check your website for updates, rumors, tips and tricks of the trade.  

I was wondering if you would have any insight on HDR.   I am trying out Photomatix and wanted to know your opinion on the software.  What are your recommendations?

I currently use Lightroom 4 to process all my images and an idea dawned upon me.  Could I potentially recreate the process of bracketing by exporting 1 photo several times at different exposures or by playing around with the shadows and highlights slider? Or is there no real replacement to actually bracketing photos in camera?  I know ghosting can be an issue with HDR and thought this would be a great way to prevent that.  I would love to know your thoughts on this.
