Can a Pro Portrait Shooter Really Use Mirrorless Instead of DSLR?

Sure the image quality from the small-sensored mirrorless camera has greatly improved in recent years, but can they really hold up to pro portrait photography needs?  Can you shoot a file that will make a 30×40 family group print if you need to – one that you can be proud of?  Many photo enthusiasts are consumed by antiquated notions that a small sensor just cannot produce a high image quality file.  They obviously have not shot one of the premium mirrorless cameras.

I will tell you that the premium mirrorless cameras can produce a large jpeg that is more than suitable for a large print.  What are the details? Can a mirrorless replace a pro portrait shooters 5Ds?  Well, maybe…

Quick update. I just finished up a week with the Olympus EM5 and the GH3. I rented them with the Lumix 12-35 2.8 and the Oly 45 1.8. It was a lot of fun to play around with these cameras, and I feel there was a definite winner between the two, for me. I just recorded an opinion piece on the two cameras and my thoughts/findings. I have one more session this morning before I need to pack them up and ship them back to borrowlens.com, so I may pull one of them out one last time. Thanks for answering my questions.

During the video, it was mentioned to leave Sony out of the discussion for a bit, but my question is re: Sony and fast glass. I have the Sony a77 and shoot with Zeiss lenses. Not happy with the a77, doesn’t perform as well in low light as my old a700 with the same lenses. Looking at the a99. In the video, you said the mirrorless cameras will create eProduct files much faster and easier than DSLR. Is the Sony a99 in the DSLR or mirrorless category? Or both?

This was a great video! You have no idea how much back and forth I did about getting rid of my 5d Mark II’s and make the transition to Olympus OMD’s. As will has said over and over again the price I paid for wonderful glass was pretty low compared to Canon. I have every high end prime out there and the only thing I am missing is the 12-35 and 35-100 2.8′s which will be next.
